India is celebrating its 74th year of Independence. Unlike every year, the Prime Minister of India hoist the Tricolor from the Ramparts of Red Fort in Delhi, and address the Nation and its fellow citizens. Narendra Modi won the General assembly election in 2014 and then in consecutive year 2019, and sworn-in twice as a Prime Minister of Republic of India. Modi has addressed the nation for 7th time since 2014, while Manmohan Singh had delivered the Independence Day speech for 10 times, Indira Gandhi for 16 times and Nehru for highest 17 times.
Usually PM Modi’s address to the nation are usually quite anticipated since they are seen to be reflecting the goals and vision of his Government. What has been even more noteworthy is that the vision laid down by PM Modi in his Independence Day speeches have been properly followed-up and delivered.
Let’s have a Relook and analyse this years speech and travel back all the way to 2014:
Year 2020
Unlike other Years, Theme for this year was “Make in India- Make for the World”. PM inspired the nation to not just Make in India but even thrive to Make for the World. Other than this, PM launched the National Digital Health Mission to revolutalize India’s health sector. He also talked about Aatma Nirbhar Bharat, And shared an update on Covid-19 Vaccine. Though the speech was of 86 minutes and of 8528 words, the major focus was on making India Self-dependent and Self-Reliant which looked more promising.
Year 2019
This year, he again got elected for the Prime Minister by winning the General assembly election. Theme for this year was “One Nation One Constitution”. In 92 minutes long speech, PM Modi expressed the government conviction of unified India and the abrogation of 35A and 370 Jammu and Kashmir. He asked the nation to prioritize ‘Made in India’ products to become more self-dependent. He also raised his concern over Population explosion and it’s effect on the future. By stating this, he perhaps indirectly proposed the Population control bill to launch soon.
Year 2018
Year 2018 was the 4th last year of his 5 years term as a PM after sworn-in in 2014. From the ramparts of Red Fort, he addressed nation for the 5th time. The theme was ‘Social Justice’ wherein he assured the nation for taking tough decisions for national interest like banning Triple Talaq. He further reiterated Vision of Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee which stated ‘Insaniyat, Jamhooriyar and Kashmiriyat for the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Alongwith this, He also announced the PM-JAY which is Ayushman Yojana, World’s biggest Healthcare scheme.
Year 2017
PM Modi has always kept his commitment in whatever be the scenario. The Theme for 2017 laid the vision of ‘New India’ by 2022. He assured that the poor shall have concrete houses and farmer’s income will double by 2022. Further to this, he also announced the action taken by government to curb the corruption, black money and shutting down shell companies. He delivered his speech for 56 minutes while addressing the nation. Incidentally, this is PM Modi’s shortest Independence Day speech yet.
Year 2016
‘Good Governance’ – Theme for year 2016 which PM Modi shared when addressed the Nation for the 3rd time after he won the General Assembly Election in 2014. PM Modi highlighted how the reform measure are benefitting people, the recent tax reform GST and its role in strengthening the economy. PM also announced the Ujjawla Yojana, to end Indian household’ dependence on coal-fired stoves, which led to breathing related health issues in the families. He also highlighted the government’s decision to increase maternity leave to 26 weeks for women welfare. This speech took 96 minutes and consisted 10,657 words, which incidentally PM Modi’s longest Independence Day speech yet.
Year 2015
The 2nd year of his government and this year he focused on Corruption. PM Modi emphasized on the government’s steps to curb Corruption. He also launched the ‘Start-up India’ initiative, which had the vision the empower nation. Other than this, he announced the acceptance of long-standing demand from ex-serviceman for One-Rank, One-Pension. He reiterated the resolve to make India a developed Nation by 2022.
Year 2014
The Very first of his government wherein he laid the foundation of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. PM Modi laid the vision for ‘Clean India’ accomplished by 2019, on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. PM Modi also launched the Jan Dhan Yojana, Skill India Initiative, and Make in India program to boost domestic manufacturing. Year 2014 was the first dramatic year to lay down foundation to many resolve.
In the last 7 years of his government, he has emphasized people to be more self-dependent to build a strong economy. Unlike other years, 2020 became more challenging year as Covid-19 hitted hard globally. This Covid Pandemics put a hold on various projects this very year.
Last but least to say that whatever has been achieved and in-progress under PM Modi’s supervision, coming years of his government looks more promising. Let’s hope for the best and work towards achieving the common goal of becoming an ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’.
